Lab 16-Methods Section Hydrate 1:
1. The Mass of the crucible was measured in terms of grams on a scale; 22.5grams.
2. The mass of the crucible was then measured along with hydrate 1. 23.4grams.
3. The observations of the hydrate were then recorded and listed to be a blue powderey substance.
4. The mass of the unknown hydrate was determined by subtracting the mass of the crucible and the unknown hydrate(23.4grams) by the mass of the crucible(22.5grams) to get an answer of .9grams for the mass of the unknown hydrate.
5. To transform the hydrate into an anhydrate, a bussun burner was used in order to create a flame to eventually evaporate all H2O found in the hydrate.
6. Once the hydrate was turned completely into an anhydrate, the anhydrate(and the crucible) were measured in terms of grams;23.1 grams.
7. The anhydrous salt was observed and recorded:
-white/light green color.
8. The mass of the anhydrate was then calculated by subtracting the mass of the crucible(22.5grams) by the mass of the crucible and anhydrate(23.1grams) to give you an answer of .6 grams.
9. The mass of water lose was calculated by taking the mass of the crucible and anydrate(23.1grams) and subtracting it from the mass of the crucible and hydrate(23.4grams) to figure out how much water was lost, to give you .3 grams as the mass of water lost.
10. The percent mass in the hydrate was then calculated by dividing the mass of the water lost(.3 grams) by the mass of the unknown anhydrate(.9grams) and then multiplying that answer by 100 to give you 33.3%.
11. The hydrate was identified by matching the percent mass in water(33.3%) by a hydrate located on the other side of the lab with a percent mass which was similiar.



Hydrate 2:
1. The mass of the crucible was measured on a scale 22.3g
2. The mass of the crucible was then measured with the hydrate 23.3g
3. The observation is that it is a white crystal
4. The calculated mass of the hydrate is 1g by subtracting 23.3g by 22.3g
5. To make the hydrate into an anhydrate, a burner was applied to evaporate the water that is in the hydrate.
6. Once the hydrate formed to an anhydrate, the anhydrate was measured in 22.7 grams.
7. The observation for the anhydrous salt is it was a solid, it harden, and that it stayed white.
8. The mass of the anhydrate is .4g
9. The mass of the water loss was .6g, which was found by subtracting 1g by .4g
10.To get the percent mass of the hydrate, the hydrate is calculated by dividing the mass of the water loss which is .6g by the mass of the unknown hydrate which was 1 gram and then multiply the answer by 100.
